LOOKING BACK AS WE LOOK FORWARD

Well, the wait and uncertainty is all over. Now we look forward to some more stability and hopefully, better macroeconomic policies, which will kick start the growth story for India.

So as we end this tumultuous week, we thought we will look at some of the interesting tidbits of this Lok Sabha  2019 elections.

  • Probably for the first time ever the youth of India was waiting eagerly for 23rd May, a date more eagerly awaited than 14th Feb.
  • After Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, Narendra Modi also became the third prime minister of India who retained power for a second term with full majority in Lok Sabha.
  • NDA surpassed its last tally of 336 to achieve a super-sized number of 350 seats, out of the total 542 Lok Sabha seats.
  •  BJP itself scored a triple ton by winning 303 seats across the country.
  • The mammoth job is finally over – some 600 million votes sealed in more than 10.3 lakh electronic voting machines (EVMs) are to be counted in about 12 hours.
  • 67.11 per cent of the 90.99 crore electors had cast their vote in the polls.
  • Of the 18 lakh registered service voters, 16.49 lakh had sent their postal ballots to their respective returning officers as on May 17.
  • A million people will be engaged in the counting activity and half a million security personnel will ensure that all goes on smoothly.
  • For the first time in Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission tallied vote count on EVMs with voter verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) slips in five polling stations in each assembly segment of a parliamentary constituency.
  •  EC had cancelled polls to the Vellore constituency on the ground of excessive use of money power.
  • Celebrating the victory, Sensex hits 40,000 for the first time ever.
  • There was big data analytics at work – Modak Analytics built India’s first big data based electoral data repository of 81.4 crore voters. Rapid Extraction, Transformation and Loading (RapidETL) transliterated Indian languages for all Indian states except Orissa which helped process unstructured data while the fuzzy logic technique was used to match based on Indian names, address, villages.
  • We will remember 2019 for the war of words between leaders, saw politics getting petty and personal.
  • Rahul Gandhi’s loss will be historical and hopefully change the way the Congress thinks of the Gandhis.
  • Modi has once proven how a very well conducted PR exercise, beginning a few years ahead of elections can indeed work wonders.
  • Varanasi has indeed become a hot spot and as usual, Amethi was in the limelight with Rahul and Smriti Irani contesting.
  • We saw the highest voter turnout in the history of Indian democracy.
  • Social Media played a big role during the Lok Sabha elections.
  • Media made merry, laughing all the way to the bank.
  • This was the most expensive Lok Sabha elections. It is estimated to have cost over $7 billion, a 40% increase from the $5 billion in 2014. Compare it to the $6.5bn that the US spent on the famously free-spending presidential and congressional elections in 2016, and you realise how costly India's elections are.
