Another survey!
There are all kinds of surveys and the latest one from UBS is most certainly jaw dropping. What it found out was that to afford a kilo of rice in Delhi, an average worker would need to labor for 75 minutes, making New Delhi one of the most expensive places in the world to buy rice in.
As against this, in Oslo, one would need to work for just four minutes to earn a kilo of rice. In Mumbai the time taken would be 49 minutes. Compared to this, New York and London are also much cheaper at 16 minutes. Paris comes in also much cheaper at 9 minutes.
UBS’s Prices and Earning 2015 report aims to compare purchasing power across global cities and surveyed prices of 122 goods and services and earnings of 15 professions in global cities to look at the effects of political and economic events on prices and earnings.
The survey also looked at the differing cost of the same 122 goods and services across cities. It found that New Delhi and Mumbai were among the cheapest places to purchase the basket of items and services including haircuts, schooling and hotel rooms, at less than half the price of the same things in New York, which the survey found to be the most expensive city in which to live.
