As the sun shines...

As December dawned, there came in one news which is sure to make every Indian proud and give a boost to our Make in India initiative.

The world’s largest solar power plant, built over 10 sq.kms switched on its power in Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu. It has a capacity of 648 MW – 100 times more than California’s Topaz Solar Farm, which was previously the largest solar plant at a single location. And when the plant does run on full capacity, it can power 1,50,000 homes!

It was built at a cost of Rs.4550 crore and each day, the plant is cleaned by a robotic system that is charged by its own solar panels. This plant is backed by the Adani Group and was constructed in an impressive eight months vis-à-vis the Topaz plant which took two years.

This is not the end – another solar plant, much bigger than this one is coming up in Andhra Pradesh. Now isn’t that a feat which the world should applaud us for! Hope we can eventually wean away from this huge dependence on fossil fuel – 80% of our electricity comes from coal and India has set itself a target of bringing it down to 60% by 2030.
