Glucose biscuits wearing out
Good old days they were, when treats meant a toffee or a candy and biscuits meant Glucose biscuits. Fast forward, ten years later and there are scores of options, both in chocolates and biscuits. Parle G which has been synonymous with Glucose biscuits from the past seventy years is now promoting cream biscuits and cookies.
Companies such as ITC, Parle and Britannia have reduced prices on cream biscuits and introduced cookie biscuits as the demand for that increased and the consumption of glucose biscuits went down. During April to September 2012, glucose category had 19.3% in the biscuit market while cream biscuits had 22.2% and cookies had 26.2% share. Parle had also earlier launched Kreams Happy Happy and Festo Cream biscuits, which are jus Rs.1-5 more than Parle G. Even ITC under its Sunfeast brand is selling premium cream biscuits and cookies, such as Dark Fantasy and Dream Cream.
The country’s oldest biscuit maker, Chandigarh based Cremica Group is exiting the glucose biscuit market next year. With the fad of a busy lifestyle and fast, junk food; quintessential Indian food items are losing their ground in the market. Hope the same doesn’t happen to Parle G and other Glucose biscuits.
