Indeed slumdog millionaires!
Mumbai was always an expensive city to live. But now, the selling price quoted by a man in what can only be described as the-biggest-slum-of-India, Dharavi proves that nothing is cheap in the commercial capital of India.
While the price per square feet ranges from Rs.15000-25000 in Dadar and Rs.10,000-20,000 in Sion, a house in Dharavi costs no less than Rs.30000 per square feet. An eighty square feet house in Dharavi costs Rs.25 lakhs while a 450 square feet shanty in Dharavi was recently posted on a property selling property at an asking price of over Rs.1 crore. Yes, a shanty too has a posting on the property site!
This 427-acre slum has been home to lakhs of immigrants and daily wageworkers in the city. After the Dharavi Redevelopment plan was approved by the Maharashtra Government, these shanty owners have suddenly all become ‘slumdog millionaires.’
