Jobs going empty?
We constantly talk about unemployment and how difficult it is to find a job. But there are many instances where there is a job but no one wants to take it up. Like your plumbing or electrical work – you call your plumber and he says he cannot come or busy with something else. Or the carpenter – he says he will come later and do all the small chores together instead of coming in two days, despite earning a per day wage. We often then are left wondering – is the youth today lazy?
It’s not a question of feeling content – they all want to get rich, quick and fast without too much hard work. It is not like they have learnt to live with what small they have earned – earn, spend and then once again earn and spend. The younger generation today only spends – drawing up huge debt on their cards but they do not really want to put in as much effort as required to climb up to that next level on the economic ladder.
So while unemployment exists, the youth is very choosy about what they want to do – they will not take up just any job because they need to tide over a tight financial crunch. They would rather wait it out, depend on parents rather than work in something their heart is not into.
This is not happening just in India – statistic shows that even in USA, jobs are available in plentiful – there were some 5.4 million open jobs in 2015, the highest in 15 years but no takers. Even Germany and Canada face the same issue. This has nothing to with “full employment” this is more on account of various facts like – lack of qualified applicants; overabundance of some positions and undersupply of others; and uneven employer demand for certain talents, especially technology-related ones. This mismatch just leaves jobs unfilled while unemployment remains rampant.
