Really, sometimes when we see the news on the electronic media or even in newspapers, we tend to celebrate the same people, over and over again, with this giant size fixation for anything film stars. Every small little meaningless feat of theirs is published all over, as though they have climbed Mount Everest.

But there is little or no news about these 23-year twin sisters, who not climbed the Everest but all the tallest seven summits of the world! And this is no small achievement. We celebrate someone who climbed only the Everest and here we have these young Indian twins, Nungshi and Tashi Malik, who have summited all the seven tallest-  Mt Kilimanjaro (Africa) in Feb 2012, Mt Everest (Asia and world) on May 19, 2013, Mt Elbrus (Europe) in Aug 2013, Mt Aconcagua (S America) in Jan 2014, Mt Carstensz Pyramid (Australia) in March 2014, Mt McKinley (N America) on June 4, 2014 and recently, Mt.Vinson (Antarctica). They have earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records but within India, these daughters of Col VS Malik are unknowns.

Why do we give these politicians such prime time on TV, debating endlessly about what they did and did not do. Nothing much ever comes off it, except some more free publicity and a spike up in our blood pressures and frustrations. Why can’t we have such achievements celebrated and encouraged? At least it will motivate the younger generation to do better. Right now, looking at the way all bicker on TV, the youngsters just want to leave the country! Truly, these twin sisters need more recognition. They are the envy of world mountaineers and we are not even aware!

With all summits climbed, what next then? Well, thanks to the generous sponsorship from Mahindra group and Livguard, they will ski to the North and South poles. They will carry their own loads including gear, rations and tents on sleds, braving strong winds and temperatures touching minus 130 degrees Celsius. Wow!
