Lets keep Muhurat Trading going!
Muhurat Trading. For many of this generation, where trading is a faceless monitor, sauda’s are at the click of a mouse, where there is minimum human interaction, Muhurat Trading has lost its relevance. In the olden days, Dalal Street on Diwali evening used to be colorful, with relatives of all brokers coming in their best dresses and jewelries. There was an air of festivity on the Street and the trading floor used to be more like a get together, a big party.
Today, we have moved away from the trading floors and even brokers. Yet, this tradition continues and even the new generation, accepts this as a part of the entire trading experience. Muhurat, as well as know is a good time before we embark on anything auspicious. In the same way, Muhurat Trading means one buys stocks during the given timing and marks the beginning of a new year, Samvat as it is known. The buy order is a token of bringing in prosperity and ushering in Goddess Lakshmi into the new year too.
As mentioned, today as there is no visit to the brokers office or to BSE, this is simply a ritual and many might even stay away, shrugging this as superstition. But then in the same vein, we can do away with most of the festivals too, right? While we unquestioningly celebrate the festival of lights, let us also keep this spirit of Muhurat Trading alive; remember no exchange in the world celebrates a festival with token trading; so instead of learning new traditions from the West, let us give them something to think about and maybe follow for Christmas?
