Luxury 'Made in India' products
We shop world over for International brands, wanting to splurge on at least a few foreign made products. Especially luxury products, almost never have the ‘Made in India’ tag but looks like all that is going to change now.
The former Indian chief of Louis Vuitton’s company La Campagnie (The Company) plans to invest Rs.350 crore in a facility in Puducherry to make shoes for unnamed luxury brands starting this December. The company plans to produce 100% Indian high-end bags, clutches and clothes for the global market. There are a host of luxury goods makers who are keen on setting up base in India, proudly selling with the ‘Made in India’ tag. Many Indian suppliers who supply to global brands sign non-disclosure pacts as there is a unanimous perception that the products made in India or Asia are of inferior quality.
Indian and Asian products are, in fact, of superior quality than several Western brands. All this, but, is of no use when Indians themselves are ashamed of buying Indian brands and prefer spending double the money on some International brand. Until our perceptions change, ‘Made in India’ will not succeed even within India.
