Made to order!
Today the internet has penetrated all aspects of our life and permeates all across the country, through all strata’s of the society. Online retailing is big business in India, with Indians seemingly getting addicted to clicking and buying. Like the USA, maybe a day will arrive when more number of people will buy online than visit ‘real’ shops. And this has got some of the biggest of big names worried. Major textile companies such as Grasim, Raymond and Siyaram are planning on a new way to boost demand for their brands.
These textile companies will be pushing their brands online, offering online tailoring services. Grasim plans to introduce a neighbourhood tailor programme to improve the skills of about 50 tailors across localities in Delhi and then list their services as a digital offering through the company’s Web site. This service will be launched in time to capitalize on the festive season. Siyaram Silk Mills is also in the process of training neighbourhood tailors but the business is restricted to a few of its multi-brand and exclusive outlets. Raymond is also introducing an e-tailoring site wherein customers will give their measurements online and then get customized tailoring.
So we can now sit in the cool confines of our home and get best of the suits ‘made to order’ for us. That is if you already know your measurements or know how to measure your dimensions for the tailor. One does not know how far this will succeed but one thing seems certain – tailoring is back in business!
