Many firsts from Delhi Polls

With results on Delhi polls out this morning, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) getting a thumping majority took all the political gurus by surprise. Even the most favourable exit poll did not predict 40+ seats for AAP. Winning 67 of 70 seats is a clear landslide victory for this 2 year old political outfit!

These Delhi polls have many ‘firsts’ which will go down in the books of history:

  • With 53% vote share, it is the first time that a party has got over 50% vote share in the National Capital

  • First major setback for PM Modi-led BJP since the massive win in the national elections in last May, as BJP had won most recently held state elections.

  • First time Congress has failed to win even a single seat in Delhi (AAP won 67 of 70 seats, with BJP getting the balance 3)

  • First time a non-BJP and non-Congress Government will be formed in Delhi, of course after the brief 49 stint last year.

The above pointers are not exhaustive.

Arvind Kejriwal will take oath on 14th February, the same date last year he ended his 49-day stint in CMs office. This time around, we hope that AAP respects the people’s mandate and runs Delhi in a manner to take credit for many other credible firsts!
