Nagpur going 'orange?"
When we say, “Nagpur” what comes to your mind? Apart from being the home town of Maharashtra CM, Devendra Fadnavis, the most obvious answer is “Oranges.” Just as Ratnagiri is famous for Alphonso mangoes, Nasik for grapes, Mahableshwar for strawberries, sugarcane from Ahmednagar and pomegranates from Solapur, Nagpur is famous for oranges. And this city wants to make this its identification.
The city has decided to create its own personality – just like Jaipur is pink, Nagpur is working on colouring its city in orange colour – a representation of the oranges in the city. Taking inspiration from a marketing idea of painting the town in mandarin orange, the civic corporators took inspiration and presented the idea to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), who passed it unanimously. All political parties in the state approved. This got the go-ahead in Feb’16. And it is only slowly now taking shape.
A couple of schools were painted orange but the Congress party saw red. It felt the colour represented BJP more than oranges. So now they have worked out a solution to make it look more like an orange and less like the BJP colour. They have consulted an expert and advised on the right color mix – 70% lemon yellow and 30% magenta to get the right “santra” colour. Now this is what we call a colourful problem!
