Sunny days ahead....
Over the years it has happened often. It suddenly starts raining on a supposedly sunny day; windy on a predicted hot and humid afternoon- we blame IMD. How many times have we chided the forecasts made by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and compared it to its better equipped Western counterparts? Well, the times are changing and the tides are turning!
From use of adjectives such as ‘partly cloudy’ and ‘slightly humid’ to its recent, on the dot impressive weather forecasts; the MET office of today has a lot to offer to the common man now. While till now weather forecasts have been given out for free to callers; IMD is thinking of making it a paid service but for corporate. It is doubtful that people will pay IMD’s predictions! That faith has got to come.
Till date, 80% of IMD’s revenue has been from the Airports Authority of India, with applications now being developed for Android smartphones, to connect with rural and urban masses; things are changing at IMD for the better.
