Sweden rocked by scandals?
For all of us in India, corruption is so much a part of our lives, we take it for granted and rarely do we bat an eyelid when a company CEO or employee or bureaucrat is caught red handed. But for a country like Sweden, which ranks high on almost the best indices in the world. In fact it is considered to be one of the cleanest and least corrupt countries, ranking third in Transparency International's corruption perceptions index for 2015.
Thus the country was shocked and felt that it reputation and standing in the world was sullied when one of its celebrated CEOs, Ola Rollen, CEO of Hexagon was arrested for insider trading. Imagine the country is worried about its reputation because of one errant CEO! Here, in India, reputation of the country does not even figure out; in fact in many cases people buy the stock because it is available at a new low because they know that in the end, nothing ever happens.
So strong is the bone of ethics in Sweden and we, well, we have it somewhere within us, just do not know where.
Prior to this, one more scandal had rocked Sweden – some 11-12 executives from companies controlled by Industrivarden were replaced due to a string of scandals, involving misuse of corporate jet and lavish hunting parties. The Swedish Economic Crime Authority said that 2015 saw a 14% increase in registered economic crimes in 2015 from the previous year. Does this mean that even the Swedish, like most of the others in the world, has humans who are prone to greed, avarice and disloyalty?
