Tarik pe tarik pe tarik.....
A Bengaluru based NGO, Daksh has presented a study on the Indian justice system and the numbers justify the tears of the Chief Justice of India. In fact the system is such that everyone involved can only shed tears and empty their pockets.
The study by Daksh shows that both parties involved in the case, spend a combined Rs.1309 per day, per case. This works out to some Rs.30,000 crore per year. The litigants end of paying more – they pay some Rs.1700 crore in wages or business per day, per case. This means an outgo of Rs.50,000 crore per annum.
Daksh says that the cost of attending the court hearings is over Rs.1000/day. Shockingly, this does not include the lawyer fees its just cost calculated on conveyance and food. Shockingly, the loss of productivity due to this continuous attendance of court hearings, which in turn leads to wages and business loss is pegged at 0.48% of the GDP.
Well, the Indian courts are sitting on a mammoth backlog of pending cases – some 30 million cases. Yes, even we feel like shouting like Sunny Deol, “Tarik pe Tarik pe Tarik….”
