Telecom towers multitasking
We all would have, one time or the other, caught sight of an ungainly telecom tower standing tall, poking out like a sore thumb in the midst of beautiful scenery. Companies are also trying their level best to make the tower look as good as possible, making it ‘mesh well’ into the environment. And Reliance Industries has come up with new plan for the towers.
RIL is getting ready to launch 4G services this year through its subsidiary Infotel Broadband, plans to set up three-in-one telecom towers, starting with Mumbai.
3-in-1 towers would mean that apart from being telecom towers, which will support its 4G equipment, will also have video cameras for street surveillance. That apart, it would also have street lights, with lighting equipment mounted on them. RIL, which always plans in doing things huge, has not given any official word on the same, but word is out that it is talking about setting 8000 such towers with Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. This would be like a ‘testing ground’ for RIL to then expand to rest of India.
The same 3-in-1 concept is already being tried out in countries like Zimbabwe, China and Japan and might soon become a norm to help save cost and making maximum utilization of resources and space.
