The crisis of migration
While we sit comfortably ensconced in the warm security of our homes, the migrant crisis continues to brew and with it, the evil of human trafficking has risen to its worst ever. And this we are referring to the dangerous and treacherous crossing through the Mediterranean to Europe.
Europol, Europe’s police agency, says people-smuggling could have generated around $3 to $5 billion in 2015. This money is charged by smugglers to get people over to Europe from either Syria or Lebanon or Libya. In between they pass through arid deserts and stormy seas, with no guarantee of even making it alive. And then there is also the probability of getting kidnapped and then families needing to pay up ransoms too.
This “business” is run totally on trust with smugglers even offering deals - one free crossing for every 10. Between July to October prices soar –a single boat crossing on the Mediterranean cost $2,200 per passenger in August.
All these hardships because one cannot live in one’s own country where one was born. And this escape only pushes one into another life of poverty and no dignity.
