We are only into mid-March and it already sweltering hot, and we dread to think how the heat would be when May arrives. Just as the heat has arrived before time, mangoes have already started dotting market places. The king of mangoes – alphonso is yet to make its grand appearance but its siblings are already here.

Mangoes in March are not normal and naturally to get a bite into these before-time juicy fruits, you have to pay a very high price. And more than the ones which we normally get, organic mangoes have come and they cost the earth. It has been seen – anything which is good for the environment and good for health, costs much more. These organic mangoes are being cultivated the way it was in the olden times – without pesticides and nutrients. And therefore they cost more – organic mangoes cost Rs.1400 per dozen while the “normal” ones are priced at Rs.1000 per dozen.

With awareness increasing about the ill effects of insecticides, people have started demanding organic products and many farms have now shifted completely to organic farming to cater to this rising demand, which fetched them also very good money. And many companies are being “mango” friendly and those like TCS and Star Network have allowed stalls to be set up in their office premises for organic mangoes.
