When you renounce the world, you don’t have to renounce the materialistic things that are a part of the world. At least, that’s what Mahant Chotu Nath of Chandigarh feels.

He is just twenty four years old yet has the title of the Number One in the Nath Sector, having ten smaller deras under him. He has followers from most of North India including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.  When he is not preaching to his followers, he bids his time splurging on luxury items. A year or two ago, Chotu Nath spent Rs.10.05 lakhs on a fancy car number plate in the CH-01-AR series which was earlier cancelled by the Registration and Licensing Authority Officials. This fancy car number plate is for his Rs.55 lakh Audi Q7 SUV. Yes, Mahant Chotu Nath has nearly Rs.70 lakhs to spare for his car which he says he owns ‘ because my followers want me to travel by car.’

Despite his ‘spiritual position’, he uses an iPhone, a 42 inch LED TV and has close circuit cameras installed throughout his dera. We mere mortals, in pursuit of material things are truly in the wrong field; maybe we need a “baba” to guide us?
