What does NIFTY 50 index comprise of?

The Nifty 50 is an Index comprising of the top 51 stocks on the National Stock Exchange. It is owned and managed by India Index Services & Products Ltd. (IISL). It was formerly known as S&P CNX Nifty but later on it was renamed in 2013 as Nifty 50 index.

Nifty 50 represents top 51 listed companies which comprises of 13 different sectors. These top 51 companies are popular for their consistent earnings and high PE ratio. This index calculated in the past based on the full market capitalization however from June, 2009 the computation changed and index calculated based on the free float market capitalization. This Nifty 50 Index represents about 65% of free float market capitalization of the stocks listed on NSE as on 31st March, 2016.
